Me? Defending Free Trade?

Yes friends and readers, for once, I’m about to defend Free Trade.  CD-Wow, who deal in cheaply imported CD’s, are being fined.  Quite apart from the fact that I have previously purchased such £6.99 CD’s, I’m feeling a sense of injustice over this.  If Africa has to open its borders to cheap food imports, why shouldn’t the EU open its borders to cheap CD imports, especially seeing as these CD’s are legal, which is more than can be said for many CD’s.

According to the WTO, countries shouldn’t have restrictions on what gets imported, making international goods competitive.  This is bad for Africa, but also bad the music industry.  The difference being that the music industry can afford to defend itself.  Unlike Africa, the music industry really doesn’t need ‘fairtrade’, it actually does need liberalising.  So again, its one rule for the rich, one for the poor, and me going back to spending over £10 on CD’s.  Damn.
