Tory Maglev strategy proven wrong

French set new rail speed record

OK, I deliberately set out, just over a month ago, to not write a technology blog, but anyhow, I saw this and couldn’t resist. Its basically a news report from France, where they’ve just broken the world speed record for a conventional train. The scary news is that they’ve set it at 356mph, which means York to London in 33mins 40! Its as fast as most turbo-prop planes, and what’s more, its only 5mph slower than the fastest ever Maglev.

Add to this the fact that this is proven technology which could be deployed for a fraction the cost of the Japanese Maglev, with skills already in Britain and with the ability to be combined with existing, slower high-speed trains (not often you say that!), this proves that any suggestions the Tories will build a maglev system between Britain’s largest cities is nonsensical in the extreme and a huge waste of money, and will take years longer to achieve than a high speed line would.
