The benefits of being white

I’m sure many readers of this blog will be aware of the sentencing yesterday of a man from Colne, Lancashire for possessing bomb making gear (BBC Report). I’d like to draw attention to an IndyMedia post, which compares the 2.5 year sentence for a man who claims his stockpiling was merely for use during an impending race war, and those who’s stockpiling, or even suggestion of intent to stockpile, relates to Islamist terrorism. Once again the racism of the British courts is on display. I’m not saying whether 2.5 years is the right sentence, but comparatively speaking, its clearly unjust when other people get 40 years for preparing acts of terror.

I like this comparison made on Indymedia:

Why should a judge be ‘satisfied’ with the man’s crackpot assertions about civil war? A judge saying something along the lines of ‘I am satisfied Mr. Mustafa was convinced of the righteousness of smiting the unbeliever in defence of Islam but that he was going to be a good boy and not blow up Britain until he felt like it’ would quite rightly be considered a disgrace. I’m frankly rather staggered.
