Why I’m not watching the World Cup

Whilst the rest of the World seems to be going mad over the current ongoing sporting event, I’m neither joining in, nor totally disinterested. I just can’t seem to get in the mood when I’m abundantly aware of the immense social damage, not to mention environmental damage, that this event is causing in South Africa, and the false images being put out around it.

Parties and Movements as Managers and Changers

I’ve been pondering this relationship for some time, looking to understand why I might feel at ease in supporting a political party during an election campaign, despite knowing full well I shall be approaching politics from the opposition no matter what happens. Some pretty big issues were thrown up, and I seem to have settled on the following model for understanding my attitude towards parliamentary and electoral democracy.

Start Wearing Purple: the road to Voting Reform

I originally started writing, and abandoned, a blog post by a similar name on about 8th May 2010. That its taken this long to actually sit down and write about the shock-arrival of a new movement on the erstwhile-boring topic of electoral reform (now called voting reform, cause at least people might know what that is!). Time has moved on since the heady days when Take Back Parliament were visible in half of all outside shots on TV.

The Green League: Policy and Performance

This week saw the release of People and Planet’s annual “Green League”, a very handy and well-researched table of all the Universities in Britain and their impact on the environment. It makes interesting reading; the differentiation between the top and bottom University are enormous (though this is largely the scoring system), though they both happen to be in the same place: Plymouth.
